Chef Danica

Perhaps envious of cousin/nephew Sebastian's brand new play kitchen, we fashioned Danica a little temporary oven and stove-top. She's been eager to "help" us cook for a while already, and she took to having her own station immediately.

She concocted at least a dozen variations of pretend soup out of all the ingredients I could muster up in a couple of minutes: sausage (wine cork slices), noodles (pieces of string), strips of meat (cardboard strips), and carrots (orange cardboard circles).

She insisted that we sample each pretend meal as soon as it was ready. "It's done! Watch out, it's hot. Blow on it." Even more importantly, we had to thank her: "say xie-xie, Daddy!". "Mei guanxi". Her own real dinner was delayed by at least an hour while she continued to serve herself and us, but she didn't seem to notice. She alternated between pretend bites of her pretend food and real bites of real food. I don't think she got them reversed at all, but you never know...

Happy Birthday to ...Pumpkin?

Today we carved the pumpkins that we got a couple of weeks ago from the pumpkin farm. Danica was excited to open up the pumpkins, but not so keen on sticking her hands into the slimy innards of the pumpkins. At night, she got really excited when it was time to light them up. Dani kept repeating a phrase to me that I couldn't quite understand, and then we finally realized that she was asking us to sing Happy Birthday to the pumpkins so she could blow out the candles. Her two year old (nearly three!) mind never ceases to amaze me. More photos of pumpkin carving.

Back at Dave's pumpkin patch

We headed back to Dave's Pumpkin Patch in West Sacramento to hunt for some gourds and join in the fun. Danica got to ride her first horse, a tiny pony named Cinnamon. She picked out her ride excitedly, then was unsure as she got on, but eventually liked it well enough to go around two circuits. Sorry, Dani, you can't have one...

The Tag Goes In Back

This morning when I was getting Danica dresses, she said that she wanted to put on her pants all by herself. Ok. I was watching her to see if she had them on the right way, and then she looked up at me and told me, "The tag goes in back." and proceeded show me that she had the tag oriented to the back. How did she know that? ...I hadn't taught her that yet. I'm waiting for her to tell me that electrons circle protons.

Another Dry Day

Danica had another "accident-free" day today. No potty mishaps at daycare or at home in the evening! Yay! It's the little things in life...

Accident-free day

It's a first! I took care of Danica all day today and didn't have to change a single pull-up diaper or wash any soiled clothing! Yahoo! She even held out during a trip to the playground and a bike ride to try to see Kim finish her long bike ride. I'm sure the potty struggle is far from over, but I'll take every little victory.

Avery calves

Big, squarish calf muscles are an odd trait handed down through several generations of the Avery side of our family. We noticed today as Danica hovered on tiptoes to brush her teeth that she's working on upholding the calf tradition. Dad is so proud!
